What a Small Waterproofing Job Taught Me About Huntsman Products

Last spring, a waterproofing company in Delaware called with a small order. Twelve pails of a two-part epoxy primer, plus a couple of drums of polymer-modified sealer. Total value? Under $1,800. A year earlier, I might've treated it like a commodity transaction. I'm glad we didn't.

I'm a quality and compliance manager for a specialty materials distributor. I review every product spec before it reaches customers—roughly 200 line items a year. I've rejected more first deliveries than I can count, mostly because someone skipped a verification step. This one almost became another story.

The good contractor with the small PO

The contractor found us through a referral. They mainly do foundation waterproofing and below-grade repair in the Wilmington area. Their project manager sent over a PO that listed "Huntsman products" without a lot of detail. At first, I assumed they'd copied a product name wrong.

That was my first mistake.

When I started in this industry, I assumed specialty chemicals were all pretty much the same. A resin is a resin. A curing agent is a curing agent. The Huntsman brand was just a label with a premium price. Three years and two failed batches later, I learned exactly why brand specifications matter. But that's another story.

This time, I asked the contractor: "Do you have the exact product name?"

They did. Araldite epoxy resin. A Jeffamine hardener. A polyurethane dispersion for the top coat. All standard Huntsman products. No ambiguity. I should've checked before assuming.

It's easy to forget that a waterproofing company in Delaware might not use chemical terminology every day. They know waterproofing. They know application methods. But when a data sheet says "polymer-modified," they're not always sure what that means.

Are polymers chemicals? Yes.

One thing that threw the job site was the phrase "polymer-modified" on the waterproofing chemicals. The contractor's project manager asked me directly: "Are polymers chemicals?"

I get that question more often than you'd think.

Short answer: yes. Polymers are large molecules made of repeating smaller units called monomers. If you've used epoxy, polyurethane, silicone, or acrylic—all polymers, all chemicals. "Chemical" isn't a dirty word. It's a description.

Understanding that distinction matters because waterproofing chemicals rely on polymer chemistry. A polymer-modified cementitious coating uses a polymer binder to improve flexibility and adhesion. An epoxy system uses a resin and a curing agent that react to form a crosslinked polymer network. Without the chemistry, you'd have a hole in the foundation and a lot of explaining to do.

What I actually checked

Since the order came from a small contractor, I could've skipped the full verification. We have customers who order 10,000 gallons a year and ask for every certificate. This was twelve pails. But the risk is the same: if the wrong resin reaches a job site, the contractor doesn't have a test lab. They have a wet hole in the ground.

I pulled the SDS and technical data sheets from Huntsman's site. Checked lot numbers. Confirmed the expiration dates. Did a quick viscosity check on the resin and a solids content check on the dispersion. Nothing fancy. Just enough to know the material matched the spec before it left our dock.

The solids content was within tolerance, but barely. That was weird. Huntsman is generally tighter than most on consistency. I called our rep. Turns out the hardener lot had been stored too long in a warm warehouse. Not expired, but borderline. The rep swapped it for a fresh lot, no argument. The waterproofing chemicals themselves were fine, but the process caught a problem before the job.

The small-order lesson

Here's the part that stuck with me. The contractor later told us we were the only supplier who asked for the full spec before shipping. They'd placed similar orders with two other distributors, and both sent replacement product when the original didn't cure. They didn't tell the contractor why. The contractor just knew it failed.

That's not because the other distributors were bad. It's because small orders get treated as "easy" orders. And easy orders get less verification. But the stakes on a waterproofing job are huge: a 2,000-square-foot foundation that leaks is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

In our Q1 2024 quality audit, we found that orders under $2,500 had almost twice the first-time reject rate of larger orders. Twice. The small orders weren't arriving worse; they were being checked less. We changed that. Now every line item gets the same lot verification, regardless of value.

Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means the next inspector is watching what you do.

What "Huntsman brand" means in practice

Before all this, I probably would've said Huntsman was a raw material manufacturer that sells to big chemical companies. That's not wrong. Huntsman is one of the largest specialty chemical companies in the world, with products in adhesives, coatings, water treatment, and hundreds of other applications. But "Huntsman products" on a spec sheet is not vague marketing. It's a quality signal.

The brand tells me a few things. The raw material is produced under ISO 9001-certified processes. The technical data sheets are based on real production lots, not pilot plant samples. The SDS is updated when new data comes in. Do I trust those documents blindly? No. I still verify. But I trust them enough to start from a known baseline.

I only believed brand consistency after ignoring it once and eating a $14,000 mistake. Four years ago, I told a contractor to buy a cheaper epoxy resin that met the VOC limit. I skipped the spec check because I was in a hurry. The hardener cured too fast, the crew had to chip it out and redo the wall, and our company paid for the redo. That's when I stopped treating brand verification as optional.

For a waterproofing company in Delaware, choosing Huntsman products for a project isn't a sponsorship. It's a way to reduce risk. The chemistry is documented, the performance data is reproducible, and if something's off, there's a product manager who can answer a question in a day.

Not everything is perfect

Honestly, I'm not sure why some manufacturers' product claims are tighter than others. My best guess is it comes down to process control and a willingness to reject off-spec lots internally. Huntsman does that well, at least in my experience. But your mileage might vary if you buy through a trader or through a broker with no lot traceability.

This worked for us because we have a QC function and an authorized distributor relationship. If you're a one-person waterproofing company in Delaware, you can't test every drum. But you can ask for the SDS and the lot numbers before delivery. You can ask if the material was cold stored when it shouldn't be. You can insist on a product name that matches the technical data sheet.

And if someone on your job site asks whether polymers are chemicals, tell them yes. Then tell them how the chemistry works. It's the difference between knowing what you're applying and just hoping it holds.
