Two adhesive orders I'll never mix up again

I'm the person who orders the office supplies, the maintenance materials, and the occasional tube of adhesive. My title is closer to “office administrator” than “chemist.” But when a mechanic put a failed part on my desk and said, “we need a heat resistant adhesive, not the usual super glue,” I had to learn what that phrase actually means.

At first I assumed every tacky tube was essentially the same. A consumer tube may say “great for metal” without giving a number. A specialty product will usually list a rated range and a test method. Why do “super glue” adhesives bond to skin?

Cyanoacrylate glue is activated by moisture. Human skin always has a thin layer of moisture, so when the glue touches your finger, the moisture triggers a rapid polymerization reaction. Does this mean consumer super glue is too dangerous to use? No. It means it's aggressive. It took me three years and about 300 purchase orders to understand that vendor reliability is part of product quality. They blame the vendor who delivered the work. That's why I now treat quality as brand protection. Spending a little more on a well-documented adhesive is cheaper than the reputation damage from one early failure.

Which one should you buy?

Choose a universal super glue when:

  • The part stays cool and dry.
  • The fix is temporary, low-risk, and non-structural.
  • You don't need to document the material for a customer or auditor.
  • You can absorb the cost of a failed bond without a headache.

Choose a specialty adhesive from Huntsman Chemical Company when:

  • The assembly will see heat, vibration, or chemicals.
  • A failed joint means real cost, downtime, or safety risk.
  • You need a datasheet to prove performance.
  • The final product's reputation is part of what you're selling.
