For us, the process took about three months to build and validate. We compared 5 vendors. Huntsman wasn’t the cheapest on any individual line. But when I ran the TCO, they were the lowest total for 4 out of 5 materials. That’s not luck — that’s a business model built on lowering the customer’s total cost.
I built a cost calculator after getting burned on hidden fees twice. Here’s a simplified version of what I use:
- Unit price × annual volume
- + Freight (including any surcharges)
- + Warehousing (at $X per pallet per month)
- + Quality testing for each batch if variation is high
- + Technical support (your time is not free)
- + Risk premium (conservative estimate: 5% of annual spend for high-reliability suppliers, 15% for unknown)
Add it all up. The real price. Then make your decision.
